Description LDH are a class of two-dimensional anionic clays characterized by a layered structure with exchangeable intercalated anions, which have attracted increasing interest in the field of catalysis and CO2 adsorption. The properties of the material can be tuned by ion exchange and by dehydration-rehydration cycles. A LDH sample with Mg/Al (4:1) was modified by successive dehydration-rehydration cycles with Al3+ solutions, resulting in an increase of the catalytic activity in the Aldol condensation reaction.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the nature of defects in the basal plane of the LDH, which are responsible for the catalytic activity in the Aldol reaction
Approaches: In situ infrared spectroscopy to follow the changes in OH surface groups and intercalated anions as a consequence of dehydration-rehydration cycles. Use of probe molecules for investigation of surface defects
